Internships:

OVERVIEW

Students in the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management complete two internship courses, HRTM 290 Practicum and Seminar and HRTM 495 Hospitality and Tourism Internship. Both provide students with practical work experience in an area of the hospitality and/or tourism industry. Students may choose to work in hotels, resorts, clubs, restaurants, convention centers, tourism bureaus, etc. Students are assigned a full-time faculty member who serves as practicum/internship coordinator.

DESCRIPTION

HRTM 290 Practicum and Seminar is taken during the students’ first summer in the HRTM program. Students work in an hourly, non-managerial position, but may rotate through various other positions within an operation if the opportunity arises.

HRTM 495 Hospitality and Tourism Internship is taken by the student the last summer before graduation or after all other course requirements have been completed. The work experience must be at the supervisory level, a formalized internship, or a rotation among three different positions with a hospitality or tourism employer.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

HRTM 290 Practicum and Seminar is designed to provide students with practical work experience in the hospitality and/or tourism industry. Experiences gained by the student should provide for a more meaningful educational experience. HRTM 290 will also give students the opportunity to decide whether they have made the right academic and career choice. After completing the HRTM 290 Practicum and Seminar, students should be able to demonstrate the following:

1.       Effective interpersonal skills.

2.      Appropriate workplace attitudes, behaviors, and professional appearance

3.      Knowledge of the job

HRTM 495 Hospitality and Tourism Internship prepares students for employment upon graduation by allowing them to develop job knowledge and professional behaviors appropriate for managerial positions in the hospitality/ tourism industry. The primary objectives are to provide students with the ability to:

1.      Identify and analyze operational issues and/or problems

2.      Formulate recommendations and/or solutions

Benefits to Internship Providers

Hiring student interns creates the opportunity to recruit future employees, as interns have had the chance to prove themselves. Employers have also told us that interns provide fresh, enthusiastic and productive employees who can bring new and innovative ideas to the workplace. Participating in the HRTM Internship Program Strengthens the bond with the university and projects a favorable image in the community. As an internship provider, you will have an impact on molding the lives of students.

REQUIREMENTS FOR HRTM 290 AND HRTM 495

Students are required to work a minimum of 400 hours in an approved hospitality or tourism business environment. A final paper is due at the end of the practicum/internship. The paper is more descriptive for the HRTM 290 Practicum and Seminar, and more analytical for the HRTM 495 Hospitality and Tourism Internship. , and regular e-mail assignments between the student and his/her internship coordinator ensures that progress is being made on the final paper. Student interns are also evaluated by a manager at the internship site who supervises the student intern’s work.
